Overview

Following the success of the Botanics project in Kilmaurs, our client - Hope Homes Ltd - invited us to support them again in the development of a master plan for a 125 unit, five-phase housing development at Ardrossan Road, West Kilbride.

This project sought to use a similar design vernacular to that of the stunning ‘Knockroon’ housing development that our client developed in collaboration with the Princes Trust.

Our client was keen for us to create a site layout that felt like it had organically grown and evolved over time.

Whilst some existing house type designs were pre-established, we were asked to design various ‘one off’ feature house types to add variety to the street elevations and site layout, and to create a feeling of established external space.

We developed a conceptual narrative that allowed us to play with external treatments, landscaping and building massing, placing familiar traditional features such as a ‘village green’ and pedestrianised areas at strategic locations throughout the site.

The green space was important to encourage community interaction whilst contributing to successful placemaking within the development.

Materials and finishes

The development features elements that are individual to each house type, with attention to detail to boundary treatments and house names, both with the intention of contributing towards an enhanced streetscape.

Each property is built solidly with natural materials such as sandstone, larch and slate.

Outcome

Our team worked closely with the client to develop a master plan that was different to the norm, resulting in a finished design which really allowed us to get creative and push expected design boundaries.
